Illustrated by Chelsea Akpan.

The Broken Mirror is a student-driven creative writing event hosted at the University of Texas at Arlington.

Participants write short stories inspired by a single prompt, inevitably leading to vastly different interpretations of the same idea. Like a broken mirror, the subject is the same, but reflected from different angles and perspectives.

We welcome stories from all genres: science fiction, fantasy, horror, and everything in between.

We also accept poems!

How it works

  • A prompt is determined by the Broken Mirror team.
  • Participants are given a one-month deadline to write a short story inspired by it.
  • Participants submit short stories, which are then gently edited and showcased on this website.
  • Remember, anyone affiliated with UTA may enter. That means students, alumni, faculty, and staff are eligible.
